Santa Clarita, CA : Motorcyclist injured in crash on San Francisquito Canyon Road on Sunday afternoon, June 5, 2016

A motorcyclist travelling with a group of about two dozen bikers was injured and taken to the hospital Sunday afternoon on San Francisquito Canyon Road, an officer with the California Highway Patrol said.

The solo-vehicle crash happened shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday as a group of motorcyclists rounded a series of hairpin turns on San Francisquito, about 5 miles north of Copper Hill Drive, CHP Officer Mike Karr said.

“The motorcyclist was travelling southbound on San Francisquito when, for unknown reasons, he left the roadway and collided with the ground,” he said.

“He was taken to the hospital,” he said.

The motorcyclist, who according to his friends is in his mid 40s, was riding a red Ducati 1198 at the back of the motorcycle group, said the man’s friend and fellow biker Vaughn Corden.

“He’s a big heavy man so when he hit the ground it really had an impact,” Corden said.

“He lost consciousness and we think he broke some ribs. He was having trouble breathing,” Corden said.

Paramedics with the Los Angeles County Fire Department took the injured man to Henry Mayo Newall Hospital.

He was travelling with a group called the So Cal Sport Bikers, Corden said.

“We’re a meet-up group, not a motorcycle club,” he said. “I’m the sweeper. I ride at the back and it’s my job to make sure everyone stays safe.”

The winding aspect of San Francisquito Canyon Road makes it popular among motorcyclists.

“Look at how beautiful it is out here,” Corden said. “There’s a lot of knuckleheads and hooligans but that’s not us. If you go through here at 40 miles an hour, it’s just as much fun as going 90 miles an hour.”
