The driver of an SUV involved in a crash Tuesday afternoon on the VFW Parkway in West Roxbury has died, according to the Suffolk District Attorney’s office.

The 54-year-old Roxbury man lost control of his Ford Escape at around 1:20 p.m. in a southbound lane, according to Massachusetts State Police. The vehicle then rolled over, partially ejecting the man and pinning him beneath the vehicle.

About 25 bystanders at the scene attempted to lift the SUV off of the trapped driver, some using jacks to assist, police said. The man was successfully removed and transported to Faulkner Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Multiple passangers in the vehicle were injured and are expected to survive, authorities said.

The cause of the crash has not yet been determined, but authorities said the early investigation suggests that the operator may have suffered a medical event.
