CASS COUNTY, ND : Elkhart toddler dies in accident on Sunday, September 3, 2017

A 2-year-old Elkhart girl has died after being struck in the driveway of a Mason Township home during a birthday party Sunday.

Nayla Ryans was rushed to Memorial Hospital in South Bend on Sunday around 7 p.m. after being struck in a driveway in the 20000 block of Old 205 in Mason Township. She later died in the hospital.

The family was having a birthday party at the residence, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s department.

A family member, 64-year-old Beverly Utt, of Elkhart, was pulling into the driveway in a GMC pick-up truck when the truck hit Ryans.

According to the accident report, the vehicle continued down the driveway, running the child over. Family members then began doing CPR until the EMS arrived to take over.

The child was taken by Porter Township Ambulance to the hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

The driver is cooperating with law enforcement. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash and the case remains under investigation.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by the Porter Township Fire Department, Porter Township Ambulance and the Edwardsburg Ambulance Service.
