Knob Creek, NC : Grandfather killed in crash on Carpenters Grove Church Road at the intersection of N.C. 18 on Sunday, 4th November 2018

A Sunday School teacher was on his way to church with his grandson when he was killed in a crash.

The incident happened on Carpenters Grove Church Road at the intersection of N.C. 18. Howard Pender was driving a Volkswagen Beetle and crossed the center line, according to N.C. Highway Patrol.

Pender struck a Chevrolet Blazer head-on, and both overturned.

Pender did not survive the crash, and his 9-year-old grandson suffered a broken arm, leg and pelvis. The driver of the SUV was checked at Atrium Health in Shelby and released.

“It was heartbreaking really,” 1st Sgt. Joshua Dowdle said.
