Tulsa, OK : 21-year-old killed in SUV crash on Gilcrease Expressway Tuesday afternoon, August 2, 2016
A Tulsa man was killed when he was ejected in a rollover crash Tuesday afternoon on the Gilcrease Expressway.
A 15-year-old passenger was also hurt in the wreck and was hospitalized with injuries that were thought not to be life-threatening. The vehicle’s driver was not injured, police said.
The collision occurred about 4:10 p.m. when the driver lost control of a Chevrolet sport utility vehicle when he swerved to avoid something on the road as he exited U.S. 75 and entered the westbound lanes of the Gilcrease Expressway, Sgt. Kurt Dodd said.
The SUV rolled more than once and came to rest right-side-up on the highway, Dodd said.
Demetri Deshone Walker, 21, was ejected when the vehicle overturned. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Walker’s pastor, Alfred Humphrey of the Church of the Gospel, said Walker graduated a few years ago from McLain High School, where he played football.
The minister said he came to the crash scene after he missed calls from Walker’s parents. When he couldn’t get in touch with them, he went to the crash scene to see if he could help anyone.
He was among at least 15 people who showed up at the scene to mourn. “It’s a tragedy, but this is part of living,” Humphrey said.
All lanes of the expressway were closed between U.S. 75 and the L.L. Tisdale Parkway as authorities investigated and crews cleared the roadway of crash debris.
