Southworth, WA : Man died Friday night when he crashed through a barricade at the Ferry Dock and drove into the water on October 3rd 2014
A man died Friday night when he crashed through a barricade at the Southworth Ferry Dock and drove into the water.
Scott Wilson with the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office said calls came in at about 6:11 p.m. about an SUV driving off the dock and ending up in the water. Witnesses said the driver appeared to be going 30 to 35 miles per hour, according to Wilson.
"We know that a car drove fairly rapidly through the exit lane at the Southworth Dock. They went through the barrier and went into the water," said Marta Coursey with Washington State Ferries.
Rescue divers from the Seattle Fire Department arrived at the dock soon after the calls came. After searching for roughly an hour, divers pulled a body out of the water at about 7:15 p.m.
Medics attempted "life saving measures" while driving the man to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, but he did not survive, according to Washington State Patrol trooper Russ Winger.
Winger said crews believe the man was alone in the car.
Coursey said ferry service at the dock has been suspended.
"We don't have any idea when the dock will be open again, so people need to plan on not using he Southworth Dock tonight," she said.
The state hired commercial divers to remove the sunken SUV.
