OTTUMWA, IA : Multiple injuries from car accident on Thursday, March 23rd 2017
Up to five people were hurt during a car crash near Evans Middle School on Thursday morning.
The two cars slammed into one another at the intersection of Finley Avenue and Ferry Street, near the rear of the school. No students were injured.
One person was placed on a gurney and loaded into an ambulance for the trip to Ottumwa Regional Health Center. The Ottumwa Police Department sergeant in charge of the accident scene said four others suffered possible injuries.
The sergeant's initial survey indicates one car was heading north to south on Ferry while the other was traveling on Finley. They'd be investigating before drawing a conclusion.
But the cars themselves told part of the story: A tan Ford had its front end smashed. A red Buick had its side punched in. The Buick did not have a stop sign, but the Ford did have a stop sign.
Thursday morning, traffic at the intersection was blocked during the accident as well as during the cleanup.
Cleanup was done by the Ottumwa Fire Department. Passengers were assessed and the injured transported by ORMICS.
A first responder said none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
