Weld County, CO : Berthoud man died in Motorcycle crash on Interstate 25 in southern Weld County on Tuesday morning, Aug 4, 2015

A motorcyclist from Berthoud died Tuesday morning in a traffic crash on Interstate 25 in southern Weld County.

Kevin Hastings, 54, of Berthoud was driving south on Interstate 25 on his motorcycle when, about 5:30 a.m., he collided with the driver of a 2001 Dodge Stratus. The car’s driver was attempting a U-turn to the southbound lanes from the northbound side of the highway through a median near Colo. 66 in Mead.

The driver of the Dodge — identified as Abel Carv, 24 of Laramie, Wyo. — had lost control of his vehicle prior to the crash, said Trooper Nate Reid, spokesman for the Colorado State Patrol. Carv ended up spinning into the median and came to a stop facing north in the median. No one was injured in that initial event.

Carv then tried to merge onto the southbound lanes of I-25, but failed to yield for oncoming traffic. Hastings ended up colliding with the front passenger side of the Dodge, Reid said.

Hastings initially survived the crash and was taken by helicopter to Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, according to a coroner’s office news release. He was pronounced dead about 7 a.m. Carv did not sustain any injuries in the crash.

Southbound Interstate 25 was closed temporarily to allow the helicopter to land and allow emergency crews to clear the scene. The crash remains under investigation and charges against Carv are pending, Reid said.

The fatality is the 37th so far this year on Weld roads. Through this date last year, 34 people had died.
