A 21-year-old Easton man was killed when he was thrown out of a car that crashed early Friday on Route 22 eastbound near Bethlehem, snarling traffic in the area of Routes 512 and 191 for nine hours.
Brett C. Kline of Ann Street, who was a passenger in the car, died after being taken to St. Luke's University Hospital in Fountain Hill following the 3:22 a.m. wreck, a news release from the Lehigh County coroner's office said.
The driver, Stephen C. Sales, 23, of Nazareth, lost control of the car about a mile before the Route 191 exit in the area of mile post 329 in Bethlehem Township.
State police said the car hit the center median and then an embankment before ending up on the right shoulder. Most of the damage was to the car's rear bumper, which was broken into pieces and lying on the highway.
A news release from state police did not indicate if Sales was injured.State police shut down Route 22 eastbound between Routes 512 and 191 to investigate. Traffic was detoured off Route 22 onto Route 512, causing traffic to back up for several miles to Airport Road. Motorists found themselves navigating through the surrounding industrial parks to return to Route 22 via Route 191
