MEMPHIS, TN : School bus driver ticketed after crash kills mother of 7 Wednesday, September 7th 2016,
A driver was killed when their car collided with a school bus near the intersection of Shelby Drive and Mill Branch Road.
Memphis Police Department said the bus driver was not injured, but she has been ticketed for the crash. There were no kids on the bus, but the 39-year-old woman driving the car died in the crash.
MPD identified her as Akisha S. Bodie, 39. She was driving westbound on Shelby Drive when her car crashed into a school bus going the opposite direction and turning left onto Millbranch Road.
Monique Weatherspoon said she saw Bodie’s car spin out and wrap around a pole.
“It spun right in front of us,” Weatherspoon said. “We tried to get her out before the ambulance come, and at the same time I'm calling 9-1-1 trying to get somebody out here. We saw it; they tried, did what they could, and she gone.”
Officers said the bus was turning left through a yellow light. They said the bus driver did not have the right of way and should have yielded to Bodie's oncoming car.
According to Bodie’s cousin Sada Whitaker, the crash happened right after Bodie dropped her five-year-old son off at school.
“You just can't believe it,” Whitaker said. “You would never think it would be your family member.”
Bodie leaves behind seven children and a husband.
“She's an outstanding mom,” Whitaker said. “She's a great mom; she loves children.”
Brodie’s family is hoping to warn others to take precaution at the busy intersection. Whitaker said life is too important.
“Slow down and do your part, and wait until everyone else passes by.”
Durham School Services bus driver April Christopher was issued a ticket for "failure to yield left turn resulting in death."
