Belmont County, OH : Three people killed in recreational-vehicle wreck on private property near Powhatan Point on Saturday, February 6, 2016
Three people died in a recreational vehicle crash on Saturday.
Belmont County Sheriff David Lucas said the three people who were killed were the only ones involved in the single-vehicle accident. The crash occurred on private property north of Powhatan Point and south of Dilles Bottom, Lucas said, noting that the vehicle went over a high wall and fell some distance to the ground below.
A Belmont County dispatcher said the first call reporting the accident was received by the 911 Center at 1:31 p.m.
Later in the afternoon, all lanes of Ohio 7 were closed while first responders worked attended to the accident scene.
Lucas said officials decided to close the highway to ensure the safety of investigators and emergency medical personnel, since they were working near the roadway.
According to dispatch, Powhatan Point and Shadyside EMS were the first agencies dispatched to the scene. Members of county's UTV Task Force later arrived to assist.
That unit consists of fire department personnel who use utility terrain vehicles to reach remote areas or travel over difficult terrain.
Lucas declined to release the victims' names or additional details of the crash, citing concern for their families.
