Blue Springs, MO : A man involved in a vehicular accident on Thursday, December, 7th 2017

A man who had just been involved in a vehicular accident walked onto 23rd Street in Independence and was hit by a work van during the pre-dawn hours Thursday.

The injured man was rushed to the hospital and was in critical condition as of Thursday afternoon, police said Thursday.

The accident happened about 3:30 a.m. on eastbound 23rd Street near Forest Avenue, a block west of Crysler Avenue. According to police, the man walked into the street after backing up a van and getting it wedged between a small commercial building and a light pole. Police do not know why he walked into the street, but when he did so an eastbound van hit him.

The initial incident damaged the corner of My Baby & Kids Closet, a small business that sells gently used and discounted children’s clothing, enough that city officials had to declare the building dangerous and close it at least temporarily. The building corner was boarded and propped up by Thursday afternoon, and the business was taped off.

The person driving the van on 23rd Street was not injured, police say. Queen Taco, the restaurant adjacent to My Baby & Kids Closet in the commercial building, was not affected by the accident.
