Police are investigating a crash involving a city water truck and a Lee County school bus Wednesday afternoon near Stella Street and Royal Palm Avenue. Officials confirm the driver of the truck, 40-year-old Ralston Thomas, has died. According to the police report, the truck crashed into the side of the bus after the school bus ran a stop sign. WINK News has learned at the time of the crash, he was not wearing a seatbelt. Thomas's family says he did not have a wife or kids but he loved his job. He was a city employee for 20 years and at work, they called him "Pops." A fellow city employee said if anyone ever had a question about how to do something, they'd ask Thomas. His mother Bona Thomas says she had just talked to her son on the phone the night previous to the crash. "He said he was feeling pain in his chest in his body. So we spoke and he said 'Ok I'll see you in the morning.' Then I got the call this morning and that's when they told me he passed away." The driver of the school bus was also taken to the hospital. School officials say she is recovering and is not assigned to a route at this time. There were no students on the bus at the time of the accident.
