Motorcyclist Rakesh Bhatt killed on Van Dorn Street in accident with garbage truck

The driver of a motorcycle was killed Thursday morning in an accident involving a garbage truck, authorities say.

The victim has been identified as Rakesh Bhatt, a 54 year-old Springfield, Virginia man.

Alexandria Fire says that the accident occurred at the intersection of Van Dorn Street and Taney Avenue just after 7 a.m. Officials say the driver of the trash truck was traveling north on Van Dorn Street and attempted to make a right turn when it hit the victim. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
