Hagerstown, MD : Woman dies in motorcycle crash on Alternate U.S. 40 between Boonsboro and Hagerstown on Friday afternoon, May 20, 2016

A Hagerstown woman died Friday afternoon when the motorcycle she was riding collided with a car at a curve on Alternate U.S. 40 between Boonsboro and Hagerstown, according to Maryland State Police.

Senior Trooper Andre Butler said at the scene that the accident happened at about 1 p.m., when the woman was heading eastbound with a second motorcyclist and collided with a westbound Buick sedan near Cool Hollow Road.

"For reasons unknown at this time ... the motorcycle crossed the double solid yellow line into oncoming traffic," he said.

Bultler said the woman, whose name won't be released until her family has been notified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The white motorcycle and the gray Buick came to rest against a guardrail on the north side of the roadway.

Debris was scattered across both lanes, which were closed to traffic for several hours while an accident-reconstruction team investigated the crash.

Butler said two passing motorists, including a nurse who was going to work at Meritus Medical Center east of Hagerstown, tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate the victim.

The woman's body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy, Butler said.

Neither the driver of the Buick nor the other motorcyclist was injured, Butler said.
