BROOKINGS, SD : 3 injured in Hwy 14 crash near Brookings on Wednesday, 7th March 2018
A woman and two children were injured Wednesday evening when her car slid into the path of an oncoming semi on an icy Highway 14, three miles east of Brookings.
A 2002 International 9400 driven by a 44-year-old man was traveling east on Highway 14 at 5:50 p.m. At the same time, a 2009 Toyota Corolla driven by a 27-year-old woman was traveling west on Highway 14 when she lost control on the icy roads.
The Toyota slid across the center line into the eastbound lane and spun 360 degrees. The vehicles collided, and the Toyota slid into the south ditch, coming to a final rest facing north. The semi came to a rest on the roadway in the eastbound lane.
The driver of the Toyota sustained serious injuries and was transported to the Brookings Hospital. Two passengers in her car, boys ages 10 months old and 6 years old, received life-threatening injuries. They were transported to Sioux Falls hospitals.
The semi driver was not injured.
All parties involved in the accident were wearing seatbelts, and no charges are pending, according to Tony Mangan, spokesman for the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Other agencies responding to the scene included the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Brookings Police Department, Brookings Ambulance, Elkton Ambulance and Aurora Fire Department.
The names of those involved in the crash have not been released yet.
