Brooksville, FL : Man critically injured in crash with Hernando County school bus on Tuesday morning, September 27, 2016

The driver of a car was critically injured Tuesday morning after the vehicle smacked into the back of a school bus east of Brooksville, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The 30-year-old man, who was not identified, was driving a 1992 Saturn coupe east on Mondon Hill Road near Weatherly Road just after 6 a.m, troopers said. A Hernando County school bus that had just picked up its first student was traveling ahead of the driver at a slower speed. The man failed to slow down in time to avoid hitting the back of the bus, the FHP said.

The man, of Brooksville, was not wearing a seat belt, troopers said. He was flown to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point.

Neither the bus driver, Willamena Parrott Bates, 57, nor passengers Laura M. Mathis, 58, and a 15-year-old boy, all also of Brooksville, suffered injuries.

The crash was under investigation Tuesday.
