Fort Myers, FL : Woman crashes SUV into Fort Myers day care center on Monday, November 14th 2016
It was 1:30 p.m. Monday before day care owner Rita Morales had time to take a deep breath and stop shaking, relieved all her staff's training paid dividends.
About 10:15 a.m., a woman drove her Ford Explorer into Rita's Daycare Center in Fort Myers, narrowly missing two toddlers on the playground, striking a corner of the building and splintering the stucco the length of the building.
Vanessa Morales, a teacher at the center, said her mother has operated at the site on Carolina Street for nearly 13 years. It has nearly 50 preschool children enrolled and has nine employees.
Rita Morales said the 2-year-old class was on the playground, but the older ones were delayed when their lesson went long. They were lining up at the door when the crash occurred.
