Warrenton, VA : A bus filled with elementary school students was involved in a three-vehicle crash on Wednesday, January, 24th 2018
A bus filled with elementary school students was involved in a three-vehicle crash Wednesday near Opal on U.S. 17, but none of the students were injured, and the mother of one of them was in the vehicle that hit the bus.
The driver of the truck that hit the van the mother was driving was charged with failing to yield the right-of-way, according to the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office.
It was a pickup truck that crashed into a minivan the mother was driving that was pushed into the bus, which was stopped, sheriff’s office officials said.
“My first thought was ‘Oh My God,’ they are not going to stop, and then I looked at the bus,” the mother said after the accident. I knew the truck and I were going to hit, but when the force of the impact pushed me into the bus, my heart broke.”
The drivers of the pickup and the van were taken to the hospital, deputies said. It was around 8 a.m. on Wednesday when the truck attempted to cross U.S. 17 from Covington's Corner Road to Old Marsh Road near Balls Mill Road, law-enforcement officials said.
The truck struck the minivan, which was traveling north on U.S. 17, according to the sheriff’s office, pushing the van into the school bus at the intersection of Old Marsh Road at U.S. 17.
There were no injuries reported by the 24 children and one adult on the school bus, deputies said. The students were taken to school in another bus.
The incident remains under investigation.
“There was a bystander that came to check on me,” the mother said. ”I asked her to look at the bus to see if there was a young girl in the front crying. She came back and told me ‘yes’. I was able to get out of my car and walk to the bus. We embraced and she just kept asking me if I was okay.”
“Mommy there’s so much glass, are you sure your okay?” the mother said her daughter asked. “I knew if she saw me it would ease her concern. A deputy escorted me back to my car. When I was being loaded for transport to the hospital, she blew me a kiss.”
