Boulder County, CO : IRONMAN Boulder cyclist dies in crash on US 36 north of Broadway Sunday morning, August 7, 2016
An IRONMAN Boulder cyclist died after getting hit by a car on US 36 just north of Broadway Sunday morning, marathon officials confirmed with Denver7.
The cyclist was identified as Michelle Walters, 34, of McCook, Nebr., Colorado State Patrol spokesperson Tim Sutherland said in a statement.
“We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of one of our athletes at IRONMAN Boulder," an IRONMAN Boulder official said in a statement. "We are working with the Colorado State Patrol to gather all of the details regarding the incident that occurred on State Highway 36 just north of Broadway. Our condolences go out to the athlete’s family and friends, whom we will continue to support.”
The crash happened at around 9:54 a.m., a CDOT official reported through Twitter.
The driver stayed at the scene of the crash to help in the investigation, Sutherland said.
Alcohol and speed are not believed to be contributing factors in the crash, Sutherland added. The crash remains under investigation.
Roads were back open at around 2:10 p.m., CDOT said.
