Two children were hospitalized in off-road vehicle crash

Two children were hospitalized Friday night after they were thrown from an off-road vehicle in Wells County, authorities said.

Indiana conservation officers said Trinity E.F. Wine, 12, of Keystone, was operating a Polaris Ranger on private property near 1500 E. 900 South in Keystone at 6:50 p.m. Tess E. Gilbert, 12, of Warren, was riding along.

Wine was traveling on a gravel driveway when she lost control of the vehicle and it rolled over, officials said.

Neither child was wearing a seat belt or helmet, and both were thrown from the vehicle. Gilbert was thrown clear of the vehicle, but Wine was pinned underneath, officials said.

Wine was taken by ambulance to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne in serious condition with head and internal injuries. Gilbert was taken by ambulance to Bluffton Regional Medical Center for treatment of a back injury.
