Barrington Hills, Illinois
An 18-year-old woman from Lake Barrington died Saturday night after the car she was riding in left a road in Barrington Hills and struck a tree, police said Monday.
Barrington Hills police responded to the single-car crash at 9:05 p.m. to the area of Plum Tree Road, west of Rock Ridge Road, in the village, the department said in a news release. Officers found three people injured — all occupants of the car — who were taken to area hospitals for treatment.
A passenger inside the car, Rebecca Soderman, of the 0-100 block of West Indian Trail Road in Lake Barrington, later died from critical injuries from the crash after being taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, according to Barrington Hills police.
The 21-year-old man who was driving the vehicle was sent to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington for treatment of minor injuries, police said.
A 16-year-old girl who was a passenger in the vehicle also was taken to Good Shepherd for treatment of minor injuries, police said.
Investigators have determined that a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu was driving west on Plum Tree Road when it left the road and struck a tree. Barrington Hills police and the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team continue to investigate the crash, authorities said.
A senior at Barrington High School, Soderman always was willing to help others, her father Randall Soderman said Monday.
The family is planning a "celebration of her life" this weekend at their home in Lake Barrington for close family and friends, he said.
"In Rebecca, our community has lost a compassionate young woman who not only felt the pain of others, but found meaning and joy in offering them comfort," Randall Soderman said.
In a message to parents Monday, Barrington High School Principal Stephen McWilliams said counselors will be available to help students as they cope with the loss of their classmate.
"I spoke to Rebecca's family who is grieving the unexpected loss of their child. I understand that many of her friends and their families will have difficulty coping with this loss as well," McWilliams said in his message to parents. "Our priority is supporting our students as they grieve the loss of their classmate."
The Fox River Grove Police Department and the Cary Fire Department both assisted Barrington Hills police on the scene of the crash, police said.
