66-year-old Lakeland man is dead after a car accident on Sunday afternoon, police say

According to Lakeland Police Department, James R. Birkhold was driving a 2014 Lexus ES 350, headed east along Beaker Boulevard when he turned left onto Harden Boulevard and collided with a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado, which was headed south.

The pickup truck veered off the road and into a ditch, said spokesman Sgt. Gary Gross in an email. Both the driver of that vehicle, 24-year-old Kyle T. Cooper, and the passenger, 20-year-old Morgan Thomas, were taken to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center with minor injuries.

Birkhold and his passenger, 66-year-old Don Lindleg, were also taken to that hospital, where Birkhold was pronounced dead. Lindleg, who is from South Carolina, sustained minor injuries.

Police responded around 1:40 p.m. and an investigation is ongoing.
