Abilene, TX : Two people dead in a single-vehicle accident on South First Street on Thursday afternoon, December 25, 2014

A single-vehicle accident Thursday afternoon left two elderly Abilene residents dead, according to police.

Larry B. Fann, 76, of Abilene, was driving a blue Nissan Versa east on South First Street between Sayles Boulevard and Amarillo Street when the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed east on South First Street when it suddenly swerved across traffic, hopped the curb and struck a tree near the train tracks at about 2:49 p.m. Thursday, Abilene Police said.

Both Larry Fann and and his wife, Georgeann R. Fann, 76, were transported to Hendrick Medical Center, where they were pronounced deceased.

As for the cause of the accident, Patrolman Mike Ricker couldn’t speculate, but said a medical emergency, such as a heart attack while driving, was a possibility.

“We’ll need to check the driver’s medical history,” Ricker said. “Right now there’s no evidence to support it but it’s a possibility.”

Alcohol was ruled out as a cause, according to police.

Several witnesses reported the accident to police, with several jumping in to assist the husband and wife.

Johnny Diaz, of Abilene, said he heard the accident occur while in his vehicle was heading west on South First Street and saw the debris of the aftermath fly through the air. He left his vehicle, along with several others in the vicinity, to attempt to rescue and assist those involved.

“I heard it and saw the headlights fly through the air,” he said. “The two people inside were not responsive, so we broke the glass to try to get to them.”

Diaz suffered a minor cut to his forearm in the ensuing rescue effort, which allowed rescuers to access the passenger side. Fire fighters used a hydraulic rescue tool to extricate the driver.

The incident is still under investigation, police said
