ELMIRA, NY : School bus involved in crash on Monday, November, 27th 2017

Patrolmen responded to the intersection of East Washington Avenue and Oak Street at about 7:50 a.m. Monday for a two vehicle crash involving an Elmira School District bus and a city garbage truck.

Elmira City Police Sgt. William Solt said the bus had been turned onto its side and a utility pole had been struck and broken. The Elmira Fire Department and Erway ambulance arrived at the scene shortly after.

At the time of the crash there was only one student on the bus, police said. The student was not injured, but was taken to a local hospital for evaluation as a precaution.

Patrolmen were assisted at the scene by the Chemung County Sheriff’s Department and representatives from the Elmira City School District and Bus Garage. New York State Electric and Gas was also called to the scene to repair the damaged pole.

Solt said an investigation into this crash determined the garbage truck was travelling east on East Washington Avenue and the bus was travelling north on Oak Street. The school bus did fail to stop at the stop sign on Oak Street, police said.

The driver of the garbage truck attempted to avoid a collision, but was unable, police said. When the bus was struck, it spun around and hit the utility pole before turning onto its side. The driver and student were able to safely exit the bus.

The driver of the garbage truck was transported to a local hospital for what appeared to be minor injuries. The driver of the school bus was ticketed for failure to stop at a stop sign.
