Oakland, CA : One man killed and three other people injured in crash on Friday November 27 2015
A man was killed and three other people were injured early Friday when a speeding car became airborne and crashed in East Oakland near the Oakland Zoo, the California Highway Patrol said.
The Alameda County Coroner's Office identified the man killed as Tuiono Puafisi, 19, of Oakland.
The three survivors, including the 21-year-old driver and two female passengers, ages 23 and 29, are from Oakland.
The CHP said the four people were in a 1997 Toyota Corolla going westbound on Interstate 580 near the 98th Avenue offramp at speeds from 75 to 85 mph, about 12:25 a.m. Friday.
Officer Sean Wilkenfeld said for unknown reasons the driver lost control and traveled off the roadway, striking a concrete curb and going into a dirt area. The Toyota then went airborne and hit two trees, causing the two rear passengers, both women, to be ejected before the Toyota came to rest on its wheels facing southeasterly on an embankment separating Interstate 580 and the 98th Avenue offramp.
The women were not wearing seatbelts, Wilkenfeld said. The driver had to be extricated by firefighters. Puafisi, who was in the front passenger seat, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The injured people were taken to a hospital, where their conditions ranged from critical to serious. The driver and one of the women passengers are related, the CHP said, but exactly how was not known.
The CHP said it was determined the driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
