CAMERON, NY : One person killed in Cameron motor vehicle crash on Wednesday, 16th May 2018
A sharp curve and plunge into a creek claimed the life of a Canisteo man on Wednesday.
At approximately 9:58 a.m., a vehicle traveling southbound on county Route 119 in the Town of Cameron crashed when it failed to negotiate a curve just north of the Angel Road intersection, leaving the driver injured and a passenger in the vehicle dead.
According to State Police investigators, the vehicle crossed the opposite lane of traffic, left the roadway, impacted a guardrail, struck a curve indicator sign, fell 10-15 feet, and overturned in a small stream feeding the Canisteo River.
The driver was identified as Nance A. Herbert, 79, of 27 North Hornell St., Canisteo. Her son, Michael D. Russell, 53, of the same address was pronounced dead at the scene.
Herbert was flown by helicopter to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa. where she was being treated for “non-life-threatening injuries” on Wednesday.
After hearing the sound of screeching tires, a witness to the accident living in the vicinity ran to the scene to try and assist the victims, but was unable to access the vehicle. She then quickly ran to her home and called 911.
Upon arrival, first responders from the Cameron Fire Department, set to work freeing the victims, with assistance from the Canisteo Fire Department and ambulances from both locations.
“Damage to the vehicle was extensive. It rolled an unknown number of times. It was upside down and came to rest at a 45 degree angle, propped up on the abutment of the culvert under the road,” State Police Investigator Curt Eaton described.
