Lexington County ,SC : Several people injured after 10 Vehicle crash and gas tanker collision along I 26 on Wednesday Morning , May 26th 2015

Several people were injured in a 10-vehicle crash involving a gasoline tanker carrying 8,500 gallons of fuel that hopped over Interstate 26 and caught fire early Wednesday morning, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation said the crash happened just before 6 a.m. in the eastbound I-26 lanes between exits 106 and 104, which are St. Andrews Road and Piney Grove Road exits.

The Highway Patrol said 10 vehicles were involved in the crash, including two tractor-trailers. Some of the vehicles caught fire.

Brick Lewis with the Columbia Fire Department said the fire spread to the west side of the interstate toward Jamil Road, and firefighters extinguished flames that were threatening a nearby residential area.

A Richland County deputy had stopped to to assist with a crash on the highway when his vehicle was struck. The deputy is OK. A secondary crash involving several other vehicles led to the massive fire.
