Thonotosassa, FL : Two dead from injuries in head-on semi crash on U.S. 301 near Dead River Road on Wednesday morning, October 12, 2016

A second person has died from injuries she received in a fiery head-on collision between a van and a semitrailer truck Wednesday morning in Thonotosassa, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Joan Staehle, 66, of Tampa, died Thursday morning at Tampa General Hospital. She was a passenger in a 1999 Chrysler van driven by her husband Robert Staehle, 66.

The van was headed north on U.S. 301 near Dead River Road about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday when it veered into the southbound lane and collided with a northbound semi driven by Diomithis Koukos, 61, of Spring Hill.

The van caught fire and burned. Robert Staehle died instantly. The 1983 Peterbilt TT semi continued traveling into a wooded area. Koukos was unharmed in the crash.

All three drivers were wearing their seat belts, the Highway Patrol said.
