Hurt ,VA : ATV driver killed in collision with tractor-trailer on Tuesday evening ,July 14th 2015

The driver of an ATV was killed when he was hit by a tractor-trailer Tuesday evening near Hurt.

Shortly before 6 p.m., a Kawasaki 250 entered Grit Road from Compton Drive and was struck by a northbound 1998 Freightliner tractor trailer, according to a news release from Sgt. Richard C. Garletts, public information officer with the Virginia State Police.

The Kawasaki was driven by Howard Theo Doss, 86, of Hurt. Doss was not wearing a helmet and died at the scene, according to the news release.

Reginald Dale Smith, 46, of Forest, was operating the tractor trailer. Police said Smith was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured.

The Virginia State Police Accident Reconstruction Team was called to the scene to assist. The crash remains under investigation.
