Bushnell, FL : Dunnellon man killed in wrong-way crash on Interstate-75 in Sumter County on Friday, June 10, 2016
A Dunnellon man was killed Friday after driving the wrong way on Interstate 75 in Sumter County.
At about 5 a.m., troopers with Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) were alerted that a 2012 Volkswagen Passat was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-75 near the border of Marion and Sumter counties.
The driver of the Passat, 88-year-old Clifford Shilling of Dunnellon, was the subject of a Silver Alert. A preliminary crash report states multiple attempts were made to get Shilling’s attention, but failed. Deputies with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office later deployed stop sticks in the roadway.
As deputies were putting up stop sticks, 65-year-old Dale Yokoyama, of Largo, struck the stop sticks in his 2011 Chevy pickup truck, coming to rest in the inside northbound emergency lane.
As Yokoyama veered into the emergency lane, Shilling’s car collided head-on with Yokoyama’s truck, which spun and collided with a 2002 tractor- trailer driven by 35-year-old Alexis Lorenzo Ramas.
Yokoyama was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. Shilling, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was also taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. Ramas was not injured.
