Eau Claire, WI : Man fought officer, crashed squad car on Monday, March 6th 2017

A 20-year-old Eau Claire man is facing multiple charges after a crime spree on the city’s north side late Sunday and early Monday.
Damian A. Stauffer, 3345 Runway Ave., was arrested after injuring a child and police officer, and stealing and crashing a squad car.
According to information released by Eau Claire police:
Just before midnight Sunday, police were called to a home on Runway Avenue after a family member reported that a male inside the residence was acting strangely and had injured a 3-year-old child. The caller said the man, identified as Stauffer, had left the residence on foot.
Police later learned Stauffer had walked to another home on Runway Avenue, forced his way in and demanded car keys. The resident was able to force Stauffer out of his home and then called police to report the incident.
An Eau Claire police officer, unaware of the home invasion that had just occurred, was driving through the area searching for Stauffer when he was suddenly attacked by him. Stauffer punched the officer in the face through the open driver's side window, and a struggle ensued outside the officer’s patrol vehicle.
The altercation continued with Stauffer striking the officer several times. The officer was able to deploy a stun gun during the struggle, but it didn't have an effect on Stauffer.
Stauffer broke free from the officer and entered the squad car. The officer attempted several times to pull Stauffer from the vehicle, but Stauffer put it into gear and fled the scene.
Stauffer drove away at a high rate of speed, striking several unoccupied vehicles in the alley. The squad car sustained major damage and became disabled within about two blocks from where it was taken. Stauffer remained in the vehicle even after officers gave commands for him to exit.
Officers deployed pepper spray into the vehicle, which caused Stauffer to exit. Stauffer still refused to follow commands and remained uncooperative. He was shot with a bean bag round and safely taken into custody.
Officers from the Lake Hallie Police Department assisted in the incident. In addition, the Altoona and UW-Eau Claire police departments and Eau Claire County sheriff’s office were contacted to stand by in case assistance was needed with other calls in the city of Eau Claire.
“That’s the collaboration we’re all part of,” said Chad Hoyord, Eau Claire deputy chief of patrol, noting officers from other shifts from his department also were called in early to handle other calls.
Stauffer is still being evaluated at a local hospital. Once released from the hospital, he will be transported to Chippewa County Jail, as that portion of the city of Eau Claire is in Chippewa County.
The officer was treated and released, but police were not able to provide an update on the child’s injuries.
Stauffer was arrested on the following preliminary charges: domestic disorderly conduct, physical abuse of a child, attempted strong armed robbery, battery to a law enforcement officer, attempting to disarm a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, recklessly endangering safety and operating a motor vehicle without owner’s consent.
