Millersville, MD : Two people injured when garbage and fuel trucks crash, leading to 750-gallon spill on Route 3 in Millersville on Monday, March 14, 2016

Approximately 750 gallons of diesel fuel spilled Monday into a ravine in Millersville following a crash involving a fuel truck on Route 3.

The tractor-trailer was carrying about 8,000 gallons of diesel fuel southbound on Route 3 at 6:20 a.m. when it got into an accident with a garbage truck just north of Route 175, said county Fire Department spokesman Capt. Russ Davies.

The fuel truck went off the road and down a ravine of about 50 feet, where it came to rest on its side, Davies said. It began leaking fuel at a rate of 20 gallons per minute, he said.

The Maryland Department of the Environment responded to the scene and contained the spill before it could reach a tributary of the nearby Severn River, Davies said.

Lanes were closed for several hours so the remaining fuel could be pumped from the trailer and the wreckage could be removed from the ravine. Lanes were reopened around 12:20 p.m., said Charlie Gischlar, a spokesman for the State Highway Administration.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, a man estimated to be in his mid-40s, was rescued from the vehicle and taken to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with injuries that were considered serious but not life-threatening, Davies said.

An occupant of the garbage truck was taken to Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie with minor injuries, Davies said.
