Grand Island, NE : Three-vehicle accident causes injuries on Saturday, August 5, 2017

In rural Merrick County Saturday afternoon, a 2009 Dodge Journey collided with a semi-tractor that was pulling a trailer loaded with livestock.

The three-vehicle accident occurred about 2:30 p.m. between Lockwood Road and Worms Road on Highway 30.

One of the drivers, Bernie Turner Jr. of Lincoln, was in stable condition Saturday night at CHI Health St. Francis.

Turner, 32, was driving a 2009 Dodge Journey eastbound on Highway 30 when it collided with a westbound 2010 Peterbilt semi-tractor, which was pulling the trailer.

“A secondary collision occurred between the Dodge Journey and a 2012 Ford Focus that was directly behind the semi tractor trailer,” says a news release from the Merrick County Sheriff’s Department.

The semi was driven by Clate Soukup, 58, of Lesterville, S.D. The driver of the Focus was Savannah Kahle, 21, of Minden.

Turner was transported to the hospital by the Grand Island Fire Department. According to the news release, Turner is being treated for nonlife-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Ford Focus and two minor children who were passengers in the Dodge Journey were transported by private party. They were treated and released with minor injuries.

Soukup declined medical treatment.

Providing assistance were the Nebraska State Patrol and Chapman Fire and Rescue.

“Neither alcohol nor illegal drugs are believed to be a factor in this accident, and evidence would suggest that seat belts were in use by some of the parties at the time of the accident,” the release says.
