SYRACUSE, NY : Syracuse teen who died after being hit by 2 cars on April, tuesday 18th 2017

In the hours following his death, friends and family remembered 14-year-old Dakota Kilburn as a kind, genuine person who cared deeply about the happiness of others.

Dakota, a ninth-grader at Syracuse Junior High School, was struck by two vehicles while walking in a crosswalk along 2000 West in front of the school Monday night. He was hit by a vehicle traveling south, thrown into the northbound lanes and pinned beneath a vehicle there, a news release from the Syracuse Police Department says.

Bystanders lifted the vehicle off Dakota, and a medical helicopter took him to Primary Children’s Hospital, the release says. He died as a result of his injuries Tuesday morning.

Friends wore purple Tuesday in the ninth-grader’s honor. They also began organizing a memorial for him, creating a safety campaign in his honor and promoting a GoFundMe page to raise money for his medical expenses.

Durke Lee Kilburn, Dakota’s brother, said the ninth-grader’s organs will be donated. “He died a hero,” Durke Lee Kilburn said.
