Brooksville, FL : Man critical in single-vehicle crash on State Road 50 in Hernando County on Tuesday morning, May 17, 2016

A Sumter County corrections officer was airlifted to an area hospital after a single-vehicle crash in Hernando County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, James Russo, 31, was traveling eastbound on State Road 50 near Brooksville when he lost control, overcorrected and crashed.

Russo, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the 2007 Toyota sedan as it overturned, troopers say. He was taken by air to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point in critical condition.

The eastbound lanes of the roadway were temporarily closed as the medical helicopter landed. They were reopened at 7:02 a.m.
