SOUTH BEND, IN : Man killed in early Sunday morning car crash on Sunday, March 5th 2017
A 21-year-old man was killed after the car he was in went down an embankment near Cooper Bridge early Sunday morning.
Oscar Alonso of South Bend died at a local hospital, according to Jessica McBrier, a spokeswoman for the St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team. Alonso, a back-seat passenger, was ejected from the vehicle. The driver, a 19-year-old from South Bend, was injured. Details about the injury were not available Sunday night. The front seat passenger was not injured.
The crash occurred shortly before 4 a.m. The car was headed south on Eddy Street, where the street curves to turn into Sample Street and go over the St. Joseph River across Cooper Bridge.
The driver reportedly failed to negotiate the curve and left the roadway after going over the raised median and a curb on the side of the northbound lane. The car went over the embankment and landed upside down on the street below the bridge on Northside Boulevard.
St. Joseph County’s Fatal Crash Team is handling the investigation.
