Detroit, MI: Man fatally struck on I-96 after fighting trooper on Thursday, July 16th 2015
An intoxicated and combative driver who shrugged off being Tasered by police before being hit by a car after bolting into rush hour traffic Thursday morning on Interstate 96 has died of his injuries.Michigan State Police confirmed the death of the unidentified driver at 10:50 a.m., about five hours after the incident occurred in the westbound express lanes of I-96 near Grand River/Schaefer road.The crash closed the westbound express lanes of the freeway, including the Grand River entrance ramp to I-96, for more than three hours.Police responded to the area after receiving a 911 call about a vehicle stopped in traffic on westbound I-96. The arriving trooper discovered the driver to be disoriented and smelling of alcohol.The driver reportedly exited his vehicle and began to fight with the trooper who was trying to keep him out of the passing traffic. The officer used his Taser but it had no effect.The driver then bolted across the freeway and then attempted to run back again but was struck by a car traveling in the westbound lanes. Neither the trooper nor the driver of the second vehicle were injured.The westbound local lanes of the freeway were closed while the MSP conducted its investigation but were reopened around 9 a.m. Thursday.
