Bangor, ME : Four injured in Route 1 collision in Van Buren on Tuesday morning, July 19, 2016

Four people were injured in a two-vehicle collision Tuesday morning on U.S. Route 1, according to local officials.

Three of the victims were taken by LifeFlight to a Bangor hospital, the Van Buren Police Department reported on its Facebook page. The three were in critical but stable condition, according to the post.

A fourth victim of the crash that occurred about 11:45 a.m. was being treated locally, according to the post. No victims were named.

Police Chief Michael Bresett could not immediately be reached for more information, but Brian Caron, chief of the Van Buren Fire Department, said a sedan and a crossover SUV collided head-on on 952 Main St., also known as Route 1. He did not know the makes or models of the vehicles.

The driver of a third vehicle that was following one of the two vehicles involved in the collision avoided the crash but ended up skidding off the side of the road, Caron said. She was not injured, he added.

Caron said the victims involved in the collision were all “older adults,” with a man and a woman in each vehicle.

He said firefighters had to use a hydraulic device to extricate one of the victims.

Members of the Van Buren Ambulance Service and Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department also assisted at the scene, according to the police post on Facebook.
