Wilmington, DE : Crash that injured six caused by man fleeing hit-and-run on Sunday, November 13th 2016
A crash that injured six people on U.S. 40 near New Castle Sunday night was caused by a man fleeing the scene of a two-vehicle hit-and-run crash on Route 1, police said.
The two-vehicle crash was reported about 8:10 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Buckley Boulevard, said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier, a spokesman with the Delaware State Police.
Roy Brown 54, of Wilmington, was speeding away from the hit-and-run when he entered the intersection and struck the right side of a 2005 Jeep Liberty in the process of making a left-hand turn off the highway, according to police.
The Jeep was operated by Mary Kate McGarrity, who was not wearing a seatbelt and was treated at the scene by New Castle County Paramedics before being taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Brown, also not wearing a seatbelt, was trapped in his car and had to be extricated by emergency responders, police said. He was treated at the scene by New Castle County Paramedics and then flown by Delaware State Police to Christiana Hospital, where he was admitted with serious injuries. Police said alcohol is being considered as a factor in the crash.
The other four injured in the crash were all passengers in McGarrity's jeep. A 20-year-old woman was ejected from the car and taken to Christiana hospital with serious injuries, police said. Three 21-year-old men also were taken to Christiana Hospital. Two were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, and one was admitted in critical condition, according to the police.
Four fire companies, as well as New Castle County paramedics, assisted in the transportation of the victims, said Christiana Fire Chief Rich Perillo Sunday night.
