Manchester, New Hampshire
A Derry man faces multiple charges Thursday after he allegedly struck two vehicles and left another driver and two small children injured, according to state police.
Police received a report of a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 293 northbound between Exits 1 and 2 in Manchester, according to a statement released by New Hampshire State Police, Troop B. A white SUV and a Mercedes were blocking the center and left travel lanes when police arrived at the scene at 1:50 p.m. Thursday.
“Witness statements and roadway evidence determined that the operator of the Mercedes was traveling at an excessive speed northbound on Interstate 93 and then Interstate 293 in Manchester,” Sgt. N.A. Noyes said in a statement. “The Mercedes struck a vehicle at the I-93 northbound junction with Interstate 293 and continued northbound. Just south of Exit 2 on I-293, the Mercedes struck a white SUV from the rear, causing the SUV to invert and come to final rest on its driver’s side in the center lane. The Mercedes came to final rest in the high-speed lane against the guard rail.”
The driver of the SUV and two small children who were passengers were transported to the Elliot Hospital in Manchester with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the Mercedes, Paul R. Hannan, 51, was charged with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving and conduct after accident.
Traffic on I-293 was reduced to one lane for about an hour while the scene was documented and vehicles were removed.
The Manchester Fire Department assisted at the scene.
