Columbus, OH : 2 women killed, 2 others injured in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 70 in Columbus on Sunday, February 8, 2015
Two women were killed and two others hospitalized early Sunday after a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 70 in central Ohio, police said.
Columbus police said the driver of a 2005 Jeep Liberty was westbound on I-70 between I-270 and South Hamilton Road when she lost control at about 2:45 a.m. EST. The Jeep struck the wire guardrail in the median, then hit a support pole for an overhead sign and caught fire, police said.
The vehicle's passenger side had hit the pole, and a front-seat passenger was trapped inside, police said. A passer-by stopped and pulled another passenger from her seat and one from underneath the vehicle, police said.
Firefighters put out the blaze, but the front-seat passenger and the woman pulled from underneath the vehicle were dead at the scene, police said.
The driver, age 31, was hospitalized in serious condition, while the passenger pulled out by the passer-by was in critical condition, police said. Police said she is 27, but didn't immediately release any other information about the four women.
Police said they were investigating why the driver lost control.
I-70 was closed temporarily on both sides, but was re-opened by 5:45 a.m.
