Eugene, OR : Harrisburg couple killed in Highway 99 crash identified on Thursday, 25th August, 2016
A couple from Harrisburg were killed Thursday morning and two others were injured in a three-car crash on Highway 99 at Clear Lake Road in northwest Eugene.
The couple, Steven E. Skinner, 62, and Annette M. Skinner, 56, were traveling south on Highway 99 in a 2014 Hyundai Veloster around 9:40 a.m. when they slowed as they approached a stoplight at the Clear Lake Road intersection, according to the Oregon State Police.
The crash occurred when a 2002 Toyota Camry, driven by Ralph E. Gordon, 88, of Cheshire, rear-ended the still-moving Veloster, which was pushed into a 2014 Dodge Charger that was stopped at the intersection.
The Skinners were pronounced dead at the scene.
Gordon and the driver of the Charger, Tandra L. Schatz, 43, of Harrisburg, were taken to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield for treatment of injuries.
Police said that one of the injured people had serious injuries. According to emergency dispatchers, one of the injured was rushed into emergency surgery.
The Skinners owned Discount Motorcycle Parks on Tyinn Street, off West 11th Avenue in Eugene. The store sells motorcycle apparel, helmets, rain gear, gloves and other accessories.
Steven Skinner enjoyed motorcycles, old cars and fishing, according to Facebook pages that appear to have belonged to the couple. The Skinners were active in the motorcycle community.
Coco Rallings, the leader of Throttle Up Crew, a motorcycle club in Lane County, said club members are “shocked and stunned by today’s crash.”
“Many of us go to Discount Motorcycle to get parts and attend their bike night,” Rallings said. “Steve and Annette were awesome people, and we intend to honor them with a ride.”
A memorial motorcycle ride was set to be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Skinners’ honor.
The wreck closed Highway 99’s southbound lanes between Junction City and Eugene for several hours and restricted northbound traffic to one lane, according to the state Department of Transportation.
