Fort Wayne, IN : Three injured, one critically, when car crashes into home, drag-racing related wreck on South Clinton Street on Sunday, February 7, 2016

Fort Wayne police said a car and pickup truck involved in a “speed contest” down South Clinton Street ended when the car crashed into a home.

The crash happened shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday in the 3300 block of South Clinton Street.

Investigators said the driver of the car lost control and left the road. The car went airborne and flipped several times before hitting a home near West Packard Avenue.

A woman driving the car and a man in the front-passenger seat were removed from the vehicle by firefighters. They were hospitalized in serious condition. Police said both appeared to be in their late teens or early twenties.

A woman in the backseat of the car was hospitalized in critical condition. Firefighters needed nearly 40 minutes to remove her from the badly damaged vehicle.

FWPD Spokesman Officer Michael Joyner said the car struck the gas meter attached the home. Firefighters had to deal with both extricating the passenger and the gas leak simultaneously.

No one was inside the home when the crash took place.

Police have not released the identities of any of the people involved. Joyner said the man and woman in the front seat are young adults, but police have yet to get any information on the backseat passenger.

Investigators have not said if the three were wearing seatbelts.

It’s unclear if the truck they were drag racing stopped, or if that truck was known to any of the occupants of the car.

As a result of the crash, South Clinton was closed for several hours while crews investigated.
