North Platte, NE : Infant, toddler injured in a car crash on Southbound U.S. Highway 83 on Wednesday afternoon, July 27, 2016
Four occupants of a car — including an infant and toddler — were treated at Great Plains Health after it rolled on its top into a ditch alongside southbound U.S. Highway 83.
But as an infant’s cries could be heard at the scene, troopers with Nebraska State Patrol said none of the injuries were life-threatening.
The driver of the southbound 1999 Dodge Intrepid, Rebecca Adcock, 19, of North Platte, either fell asleep and fainted. She swerved and over-corrected, causing the car she was driving to roll and flip over, said Trooper Carolyn O’Brien.
Adcock and Korie Ross, 25, were treated at Great Plains Health for non life-threatening injuries, O’Brien said. An infant and toddler were also treated and would likely be released, she said. Another adult occupant rode to the hospital to help take care of the children, but was not treated.
O’Brien said that seatbelts and car seats were used, though Adcock was cited for not using the infant’s car seat correctly. It was unclear if the toddler’s car seat was used correctly without knowing the weight of the child to compare to federal standards, O’Brien said.
While initial reports indicated some of the five occupants may have been ejected, Jones said that based on injuries, they more likely got out of the car on their own. Two of the occupants were trapped inside the car until the first responders jacked it up, he said.
