Martinez, CA : 2 Pleasant Hill teens killed and another injured in car crash in rural Contra Costa County early Sunday morning, Nov 1, 2015

Students at a Pleasant Hill high school were grieving Monday after two classmates were killed and a third was severely injured when a car they were in crashed into a tree early Sunday morning in rural Contra Costa County.
The accident took the lives of Martinez residents Marlena Heim, 16, and Lauren Smith, 15, both students at College Park High School. The unnamed driver — a 16-year-old from Pleasant Hill, who also attends the school — remained in a hospital Monday with major injuries, said Nellie Meyer, superintendent of the Mount Diablo Unified School District.
“It certainly is a time to just hug your kids and say, ‘We’re happy you’re OK,’” Meyer said of the tragedy.
Around 3 a.m. Sunday, the driver of a sport utility vehicle carrying the students fell asleep while going about 60 mph on Franklin Canyon Road, just west of McHarry Ranch Road. The car veered off the road and struck a tree, the California Highway Patrol said.
Marlena and Lauren died at the scene, while the driver was rushed to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, CHP officials said.
