Bridgeport, CT : Three injured in downtown Bridgeport crash on Tuesday afternoon, August 2, 2016
Three people were injured — at least one seriously — in a dramatic crash at a key downtown intersection Tuesday afternoon.
A Chevrolet Malibu knocked over a fire hydrant at the corner of State Street and Lafayette Boulevard and struck a utility pole so hard that it was left careening at an odd angle, a large dent near the base. Traffic lights at the intersection continued to function. The northbound side of the boulevard was blocked by vehicles related to the crash.
Two people in a Lincoln Navigator SUV and the Malibu’s driver were injured, fire officials at the scene said. Airbags in both vehicles deployed and both vehicles had severe front-end damage. Neither appeared to be drivable and the intersection next to the U.S. District Court is likely to be closed for some time.
United Illuminating Co. crews were coming to the scene to shore up and possibly replace the pole. In the meantime it was swathed in yellow crime scene tape to keep people away.
The bright yellow fire hydrant was lying on the grass on the other side of the sidewalk. There was no geyser of water, a fire department battalion chief said, because the hydrant was a “breakaway’’ model with a shut-off valve and a stem that snaps if it is struck.
A food truck had just pulled up to the Regus Building at 1000 Lafayette Boulevard to cater to the lunch crowd when the cars slammed into each other. The truck was not involved but ended up blocked from potential customers by the flotsam of the crash, including pieces of plastic, glass and metal and a streak of fluids covered by sand.
The accident itself remains under investigation. The intersection is the frequent scene of accidents, including at least one fatal one in recent years.
