Selah, WA : Yakima woman holding toddler hit and killed on I-82 near Selah on Thursday, January 8, 2015

A tragedy near Selah Thursday when a woman survived an accident on I-82, only to be killed standing outside her car while holding her baby.

The trouble began with a spin-out. Multiple cars piled up near the Yakima Training Center. That driver left her car in the middle of the road and walked to the shoulder, which lead to even more collisions.

"If you can, get that car off the shoulder," said Washington State Patrol Sargent Greg Tri. "Even if it's damaged, we want you to drive it off, get it out of the roadway, especially in foggy conditions like that."

Antonia Vazquez was one of the drivers who came upon the stranded car and hit it. She got her baby out of the car and was headed to the shoulder when she was also hit. The 36-year old was killed. Authorities say her baby is okay.

Troopers want drivers to avoid leaving their cars if conditions are unsafe.

"We'd like people to stay in their cars," said Sargent Tri. "On the other side of that, when people are driving into fog, be ready for the unexpected. Be on the defensive. Be ready if you have to stop that you can be prepared."

The other biggest factor is to slow down in the fog. Troopers believe most of these drivers were going too fast for conditions and didn't have time to stop.
