Bodega Bay, CA : Santa Rosa man dead, woman injured in car crash on Highway 1 and Bay Hill Road early Sunday morning, October 9, 2016
A young Santa Rosa man was killed and his female passenger seriously injured in an early morning car crash Sunday in Bodega Bay.
The accident was reported at 1:55 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 1 and Bay Hill Road, according to dispatch records.
The 18-year-old at the wheel of the Honda Civic lost control and broadsided a large eucalyptus tree, said Capt. David Bynum of the Bodega Bay Fire Protection District.
Endrias Atlaw was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 18-year-old woman, identified as Ivanova Aleksandr, was taken by ambulance and later flown by REACH helicopter to an area hospital. Her condition was not immediately known.
“At the time, it seemed that she was in pretty bad shape,” Bynum said.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating whether alcohol was a factor, spokesman Jonathan Sloat said.
Atlaw was the 27th person to die this year in a crash on county highways and rural roadways patrolled by the CHP. Last year at this time 26 people had died.
Since Aug. 23, when four deaths occurred in a single day, including two young Jenner sisters, there have been two other double-fatal crashes, one involving young Petaluma sisters and the other Russian River-area teens.
CHP officers still are investigating several of the fatalities, including the Jenner and Petaluma crashes, as well as a cyclist killed on Eastside Road. A second cyclist was killed Sept. 20 on River Road when he clipped a trailer parked on the shoulder that knocked him into the path of a passing tractor-trailer rig.
