TROY, NY : Utility rig plunges into Hudson River in upstate NY; 1 dead on Wednesday, 28th September 2016

State police divers have recovered a body from the Hudson River in upstate New York where a utility company dump truck plunged into the water after a police pursuit.

The body of Joshua Evans, 21, of Troy was pulled from the water around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, authorities said.

Police say Evans was behind the wheel of a National Grid truck when he led officers on an overnight chase. Troy Police Capt. Daniel DeWolf said police responded around 1 a.m. after the truck struck the side of a home and was circling the National Grid parking lot.

DeWolf said the driver then fled and drove through a fence and into the Hudson River in water about 15 feet deep, submerging the truck. Three tow trucks were able to remove the truck from the water at the federal lock in Troy later in the morning. The vehicle had front end damage and a shattered windshield.

Police were investigating how the man entered the complex and how he got the keys to the truck, DeWolf said. Evans was not a company employee, authorities said.

DeWolf said one person was briefly trapped inside the home but was not hurt.

The lock is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
